Traveling has always been a source of joy and adventure for me, but this trip was different. From December 25 to 27, 2022, I traveled to New York City to see him one last time before he was delivered to Turkey, where his family would lay him to rest. Though the circumstances were somber, the trip became a personal tribute to his memory as I ventured through some of the most iconic cities in the U.S. and experienced the essence of each place in ways I never could have imagined New York City: A City of Dreams, a City of Farewell Arriving in New York City early on the 26th, I was overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. NYC is often portrayed as a bustling city of dreams, and for me, it felt like a place of both new beginnings and painful goodbyes. While in New York, I paid my respects to him before his journey back to Turkey. It was a deeply emotional moment, knowing that this would be the last time I saw him. Yet, there was comfort in the love and memories we shared. I took solace in the knowledge that, even though he would soon be far away, his spirit would live on in my heart. Afterward, I visited Chinatown, a vibrant, colorful part of the city that offered a sense of calm amidst the busy streets. The sights, sounds, and smells of the markets transported me to another world. I wandered through the streets, letting the culture of the area embrace me. It felt like a moment of peace before the inevitable farewell. One of the highlights of my time in New York was trying New York pizza for the first time. The thin, foldable slices topped with gooey cheese and a tangy sauce were everything I’d heard they would be—simple yet delicious. It was the perfect way to experience a small piece of the city’s food culture, and I savored every bite as I reflected on my journey.
Washington, D.C.: Nature and History in Harmony From Philadelphia, I headed to Washington, D.C., a city that blends the beauty of nature with the weight of history. I visited the U.S. Botanical Gardens, an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. Surrounded by lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and the peaceful hum of nature, I found a moment of respite. It was here, among the beautiful plants, that I took a deep breath and allowed myself to grieve. Nature has a way of healing, and I felt a deep sense of connection to both the world around me and the memories of him. Later, I stood before the iconic Capitol Building, a symbol of our nation’s strength and resilience. In that moment, I was reminded of the importance of perseverance and carrying on, no matter the challenges we face. The Capitol, with its towering presence, felt like a beacon of hope and a reminder to honor the legacy of those who came before us. A Farewell Across Continents
As my trip came to an end on December 27, 2022, I felt a sense of bittersweet peace. My journey through New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., had been a tribute to him, a way to process my grief while also experiencing new places. The memories of these cities—Chinatown, New York pizza, Philly cheesesteaks, botanical gardens, and the Capitol Building—will forever be intertwined with the memory of him. Though my heart aches, I know that this trip allowed me to say goodbye in a way that I will always cherish. As I returned home, I carried with me the spirit of my journey, a journey that will forever be marked by love, loss, and the beauty of new experiences. |
