Exploring America’s Scenic Byways: A Cross-Country Road Trip Adventure

There’s something about the open road that stirs your soul, and this past September, my boyfriend, Lee, and I set out on a two-week, 4,600-mile cross-country road trip that took us through 14 states. Every stop brought a new adventure and a deeper appreciation for America’s vast beauty, from serene Appalachian trails to quirky museums and coastal sunrises.
Setting Out: Alabama to West Virginia
Our journey began in Alabama, where the excitement of the road ahead was palpable. Driving through Tennessee, we made our way to Kentucky and stopped in Lexington to hike McConnell Springs, a hidden gem with peaceful trails winding through meadows and bubbling springs. It was the perfect way to stretch our legs and enjoy Kentucky’s natural charm.

In West Virginia, we camped at Stonewall Resort, waking up to a misty lake view before continuing deeper into the state. The adventure began with hikes showcasing rolling hills, forested trails, and picturesque scenery.

Urban Arts and History: Pennsylvania and New York
In Pittsburgh, we tapped into the city’s creative pulse with a visit to the Andy Warhol Museum. Wandering through the seven floors of Warhol’s works, we marveled at his pop art brilliance and lesser-known personal artifacts. Before leaving the city, we took in the grandeur of PNC Park, set against the backdrop of Pittsburgh’s skyline.

Heading into upstate New York, the drive through the
Catskill Mountains offered jaw-dropping views of rugged terrain painted in shades of late-summer green. We continued to Brookfield, Vermont, where I reconnected with my cousin Betty, her husband Gary, and their daughter Carrie. They welcomed us with warm hospitality, a home-cooked meal, and stories late into the evening.

Discovering Maine’s Wild Beauty
Maine was a treasure trove of natural wonders. Our stay in Millinocket introduced us to the charm of a small hiker’s hostel filled with like-minded adventurers. Hiking at Baxter State Park, near Mount Katahdin, gave us a taste of Maine’s wild and untamed beauty.

Driving further north to Fort Kent, we stood at America’s “First Mile,” the starting point of historic US Route 1, which stretches all the way to Key West, Florida. Continuing east, we reached Lubec, the easternmost point of the U.S. Watching the sunrise at West Quoddy Lighthouse was humbling, even with clouds muting the view. The crisp sea air and rugged coastline made the early morning unforgettable.
Next, we headed to Bar Harbor, where the charming streets bustled with activity. We explored local shops and strolled along the land bridge to Bar Island, a magical experience made possible by the ebbing tide.

Our time in Acadia National Park was a dream for outdoor lovers. The Ocean Path offered dramatic coastal views and the thunderous crash of waves, while a drive to Cadillac Mountain was the perfect capstone to our time in Maine.

Finally, we ventured to Portland to celebrate Lee’s birthday with fresh lobster at the Portland Lobster Company, enjoying the lively harbor scene and unforgettable seafood.

History and Tranquility: Pennsylvania to Virginia
Leaving Maine, we stopped in Lancaster, PA, where the simplicity of Amish life was a peaceful contrast to the bustling cities we’d visited. Camping at Country Acres Campground, we were surrounded by rolling farmland, horse-drawn buggies, and the sweet aroma of homemade baked goods.

In Gettysburg, we walked the historic battlefield, reflecting on the immense sacrifices made during the Civil War. The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum brought the events to life.
Driving south into Virginia, Shenandoah National Park welcomed us with open arms. We drove along Skyline Drive, stopping frequently to hike trails leading to cascading waterfalls and overlooks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Camping at Big Meadows Campground, we lay under a blanket of stars, serenaded by the nocturnal symphony of the forest

Ending in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia

Our final days were spent exploring New River Gorge National Park, where rugged terrain, sweeping views, and thrilling hikes left us in awe.

Camping at
Babcock State Park, we were greeted by the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill, a postcard-perfect scene that felt like stepping back in time. Hiking trails in the park led us to serene overlooks and rushing streams, perfectly rounding out our exploration of this breathtaking region. The “Almost Heaven” views at New River Gorge and Babcock were the ideal finale to our adventure.

Reflections on the Journey
This road trip was about more than miles or destinations—it was about the connections we made, the history we walked through, and the landscapes that took our breath away. Whether it was a quiet sunrise by the sea, a challenging hike in the mountains, or celebrating a birthday with fresh lobster, every moment added a unique thread to the tapestry of this unforgettable adventure.
On a personal note, this journey also gave me even more healing. The open road, the stunning vistas, and the time spent in nature helped me reconnect with myself. It was a reminder of how much beauty and peace there is in the world, even in the most difficult times. The trip was a reminder that healing is a journey—just like the road we traveled—and with each step, I’m reminded of how much life has to offer.
Would we do it again? Without a doubt. What’s your dream road trip? Share your ideas—I’m always looking for inspiration for the next adventure!
